The journey of learning N-Level Physics in Singapore can be quite challenging for students, similar to the obstacles encountered in other subjects under the N-Level Science curriculum. Based on 1356 hours of tutoring, over 218 students, we have compiled a list of common challenges faced by N Level Physics students. These challenges range from grasping complex concepts to applying them in exam scenarios. Just as in other N-Level Science subjects, students of N-Level Physics often find themselves facing difficulties with the terminology, remembering formulas, understanding exam questions, and using the correct keywords in their answers. This section dives deeper into the common challenges found:

Understanding Difficult Physics Terms

  • In N-Level Physics, just like in chemistry or biology, students often grapple with scientific jargon. These terms can be abstract, with meanings that differ significantly from everyday usage.

  • Terms like "vector," "Velocity," or "frequency" can seem alien to students initially. These terms not only require memorization but also a deep understanding of the concepts they represent and the possible applications

  • As these terms are interlinked and later concepts are based on earlier concepts, students may find it difficult to keep with lessons in class and fall behind in their homework as well as exams.

  • They may become demoralised and give up on excelling in the subject.

Remembering Formulas and Concepts

  • N-Level Physics, akin to chemistry and biology, demands the recall of numerous formulas and concepts. This can be particularly challenging when students fail to understand the logic or reasoning behind them.

  • A common mistake found across all students is that the formula is often applied wrongly. For example, Pressure = Force over Area can be written incorrectly as Pressure = Force x Area.

  • Students also often find it difficult to remember basic definitions like Current or Potential Difference. These definitions are usually worth 1 or 2 marks each in the exams, accumulating to about 6-8 marks in total.

Difficulties in Understanding
Exam Questions

  • Many students struggle to decode the language and expectations of N-Level Physics exam questions. This difficulty often stems from a lack of exposure to varied question types and phrasings.

  • Diagrams are often overlooked as students thought they may not be relevant to the questions.

  • Others could not visualise the question in the mind, especially when it comes to kinematics or dynamics questions.

  • Tables and graphs may be difficult to comprehend if the student does not have sufficient experience in solving such questions.

Knowing the Right Keywords to Use in Answers

  • In N-Level Physics and Science exams, marks are often awarded based on the use of specific keywords or phrases. Students may know the concept but may not express it using the expected scientific vocabulary.

  • They may know the answer but as they do not know the right keywords to use, they may end up answering the question using layman words and terms.

  • Others may mix up keywords from other topics and concepts, and apply them incorrectly when answering the questions.

  • End of Year Exam results are the best indicators of a student's performance as the topics tested encompasses the entire year's syllabus.

  • If there is a decreasing trend from WA1 to EOY, then the conclusion is more prominent.

Preparation for Examinations

  • As N-Level exams approach, the pressure to perform can be overwhelming. Students might find tuition helpful for focused exam preparation, especially to cover areas they are less confident in.

  • However, students lacking understanding in basic concepts may feel more pressure when taking up tuition at this time as they realised the overwhelming amount of work needed to be done.
